How your result is calculated

Rule set v2026.10.02 · Verified 2 Oct 2026
Term Average (TAV)
Term Average (TAV) = Σ (Unit weight × Mark) ÷ Σ Unit weight
Cumulative Average (CAV)
Cumulative Average (CAV) = Σ (Unit weight × Mark) over all courses ÷ Σ Unit weight
Rules the calculator follows
  • All faculties grade courses with numbers from 0 to 100 and report averages as percentages. Letter grades (A+ to F-) appear only on courses taken before fall 2001.
  • A course grade of 50 or higher is a pass; 0 to 49 is a fail.
  • Averages are weighted by each course's unit weight (most one-term courses carry 0.50 units): average = Σ(grade × unit weight) ÷ Σ unit weights.
  • Any grade from 0 to 32 counts as 32 in averages. DNW (did not write exam), FTC (failure to complete), NMR (no mark reported) and WF (withdrew/failure) give no credit and also count as 32.
  • CR, NCR and MM are not included in any average (NCR is treated as a failed course); WD gives no credit and has no numeric value.
  • The Term Average (TAV) covers the courses of one term; the Cumulative Average (CAV) covers all courses to date. Faculties also calculate major and other plan averages.
  • Repeated courses (Arts, Health, Environment): every attempt is included in the averages. Science and Engineering (BASc, BSE): when a course is failed and later passed, both grades count; Science does not normally count a second attempt at a course already passed. Mathematics: courses taken in fall 2013 or later cannot be excluded from averages. Architecture (BAS): for courses of 1.0 units or more, the first grade is removed from averages.
  • An INC that is not completed within one year reverts to the earned grade or, when the missing work was required to pass, to the lower of the earned grade and 4% below the passing grade.
  • Faculty of Engineering: Quest shows averages to three decimal places and they are not rounded, so a term average of 60.000 is needed to pass a term.

Questions

How is the Waterloo Term Average (TAV) calculated?

Term Average (TAV) is the average of your course marks, weighted by unit weight: multiply each mark by the course's unit weight, add these up and divide by the total unit weight. Under Numeric grades and averages (no GPA) it is reported out of 100.

Is OpenCGPA an official Waterloo calculator?

No. OpenCGPA is independent and not affiliated with University of Waterloo. It applies the rules published in Waterloo's own documents, linked on this page. Your official result is the one on your grade card.
