How your result is calculated

Rule set v2026.10.02 · Verified 2 Oct 2026
Term GPA
Term GPA = Σ (Credit hours × Grade point) ÷ Σ Credit hours
Cumulative grade point average
Cumulative grade point average = Σ (Credit hours × Grade point) over all courses ÷ Σ Credit hours
Rules the calculator follows
  • GPA = total quality credits ÷ total hours attempted at Virginia Tech, excluding courses passed Pass/Fail and X (continuing) courses.
  • NG (no grade, for lack of attendance/participation) counts as F; NR (not reported) does not.
  • Repeats: there is no grade replacement — every repeated course counts in the GPA (unless changed to Pass/Fail per policy). A course with C or higher may not be repeated to improve the average (the second grade becomes RP). A course may be attempted at most three times (since Fall 2016).
  • Pass/Fail: up to 12 credit hours (no more than two courses per term) for students with 30 Virginia Tech credits and a GPA of at least 2.0; not for required or general-education courses. P = D or better (D- fails); an F under P/F counts in the GPA.
  • An I does not affect the GPA unless it converts to F; I and X grades become F if requirements are not completed in the allowed time.
  • W does not count in GPA hours or any GPA calculation.
