- Letter grades are awarded on normalized marks (continuous assessment plus end-semester examination); a pass needs at least 50% of the total normalized marks.
- F (insufficient marks), Ab (absent) and I (insufficient attendance) carry 0 grade points and mean the course is not completed.
- SGPA = Σ(credits × grade points) ÷ Σ credits over all courses of the semester, including courses with an F grade.
- CGPA = Σ(semester credits × SGPA) ÷ Σ semester credits.
- Mandatory non-credit courses get a letter grade but are not counted in SGPA or CGPA.
- When a failed course is passed later, the new grade replaces Ab/I/F and the CGPA is revised.
- SGPA and CGPA are rounded off to 2 decimal places.

B.Tech degree under SRMIST Regulations 2021 (CGPA of semesters I to VIII). As printed: '≥ 5.0 & < 6.0' Second Class; '≥ 6.0 & < 8.0' First Class; '≥ 8.0' First Class with Distinction or First Class depending on the condition. Upper bounds are exclusive. The table is introduced as 'B.Tech Degree with Class/Distinction will be awarded to those students who opt for early exit from the Integrated Programme'; Regulations 2021 print no other B.Tech class table although they apply to B.Tech students admitted from 2022–23 (R 8.11: B.Tech needs 160 credits). The same regulation prints a separate table for the Diploma exit (semesters I-VI): Second Class ≥ 5.0 & < 6.0, First Class ≥ 6.0 & < 8.0, First Class with Distinction ≥ 8.0 without 'Ab'/'F'/'I'/withdrawal, within 6 semesters (7 and 10 semester rows as for the B.Tech). Equivalent percentage of marks = CGPA × 10 (R 8.7).
