How your result is calculated

Rule set v2026.10.03 · Verified 3 Oct 2026
SGPA
SGPA = Σ (Credits × Grade point) ÷ Σ Credits
CGPA
CGPA = Σ (Credits × Grade point) over all courses ÷ Σ Credits
Percentage
Percentage = CGPA × 10

VTU 2021 scheme: converting CGPA into percentage of marks for employment or higher studies. VTU states there is no formula for this conversion but that CGPA × 10 may be used for employment and higher studies.

Under Outcome Based Education (OBE) and Choice Based Credit System (CBCS), Effective from the Academic Year 2021-22 (retrieved 3 Oct 2026). Checked against the document on 3 Oct 2026.

Rules the calculator follows
  • A course is passed with a grade point of 4 or more: at least 40% of the CIE marks, at least 35% of the SEE marks and at least 40% of the CIE and SEE total.
  • A student absent for the SEE of a course gets grade F.
  • SGPA = Σ(credits × grade points) ÷ Σ credits for all the courses taken in the semester, including courses graded F.
  • CGPA = Σ(credits × grade points) ÷ Σ credits for all courses up to that semester, leaving out courses still graded F.
  • SGPA and CGPA are rounded off to 2 decimal places.
  • Non-credit mandatory courses are not counted in the CGPA.
  • A CGPA of at least 5.00 is needed for the award of the degree.

Second Class (SC)50–60%—
Pass Class (P)40–50%—

B.E./B.Tech. students admitted from 2021–22 (lateral entry from 2022–23). The class is read from the percentage M = CGPA × 10 of the final CGPA. The class is reckoned after the final CGPA is converted to percentage of marks with M = CGPA × 10; the regulation says there is no formula for the conversion but that this one may be used (clause 21OB13.2). As printed: M ≥ 70 FCD; 60% ≤ M < 70% FC; 50% ≤ M < 60% SC; 40% ≤ M ≤ 50% Pass Class (the Pass Class upper bound is printed inclusive). Applies "after successful completion of the Program".
